Suggested Teaching Guide

Before you pass out the game, we suggest going through directions and rules with your students.

  1. Take out the board and show your students the different spots on the map. Point out that there are three types of tiles.
    1. Numbered tiles
    2. Blank tiles
    3. A-Z tiles
  2. Point out the tile that says START.
  3. Take out the Location cards deck and the A-Z cards deck. Hold them in different hands to show that they have different purposes. Tell them that there are only 15 Location cards, and that every Location card has a spot on the map. In contrast, every A-Z card is for keeping track of how many times they’ve gone around the map and when they land on the corner spaces. Point out the dotted rectangle in the top left corner of the board that says “A-Z”. Show them this is where you place the A-Z cards.
    1. Questions you can ask to show understanding:
      1. “Where do we put the stack of A-Z cards on the map?”
  4. Point out and explain the specific features of the Location cards:
    1. Each has a number that matches up to the number on the game board map.
    2. Each has a scannable QR code containing audio and visual aids. See the section below for further details / explanations. You can either demo the QR code materials now or later.
  5. Take out a game piece and show your students that this is how they move around the map.
  6. Demonstrate how a turn is played:
    1. Show your students the go point (Yilan Train Station).
      1. You can ask: “Where is the start line?”
    2. Roll the dice, and ask your students to tell you (in English!) how many spots they should move.
      1. You can ask: “Do I move clockwise or counterclockwise?”
    3. Move the piece forward.
    4. Then, demonstrate what happens when a player lands on a marked location:
      1. Flip over the matching Location card, which was placed next to the space, halfway under the game board, during set-up.
      2. Do the action that the card tells you to do.
      3. If you haven’t demoed it yet, show your students how to scan the QR code in order to access the audio and video clips.
  7. Pretend that you have just finished a rotation around the map and are back at the Yilan Train Station. Grab an A-Z card and read it out loud. Show your students that you now have a record of your map rotation, and have successfully gained one card!
